BKBX took a May workshop show in Gowanus’ Green Building and expanded it into ABOVE BELOW at HERE Arts Center, a show inspired by place and perspective. Set to the musical stylings of DJ Christopher Ross, BKBX used movement and narrative to explore what is above, what is below, and how we find ourselves in the here and now.

Pieces included a reboot of the pulp sci-fi favorite “Starship Excelsior“; a body-bending exploration of gender roles; an epic journey into the impossible depths of a shoe store; and time travel to the Renaissance, as a court jester tries haplessly to turn the head of his true love. We ended this show with “Fishing,” wherein a boy at the edge of his innocence is seen from above floating in a lake, fish swimming below him. Ripples grow across the water, filling the theater as the lights fall.
