BKBXKids!, a division of Broken Box Mime Theater, aims to inspire unplugged creativity in children and families by way of joyful, movement-based storytelling. We celebrate the power of shared imaginative experience and challenge audiences to explore new ways to create, connect, and communicate!

POST-SHOW ACTIVITIES!

Inspired by…My Friend On The Hill!

Think up a Nature or Climate question. Then, look up the answer by visiting https://kids.nationalgeographic.com/! Share what you discovered with a loved one, and let us know what you found out by emailing us at brokenboxeducation@gmail.com! You fancy environmentalist, you.

Inspired by…Our Home, The Earth!

With your family or friends, make your body in the shape of a tree. Then, show how it looks in all four seasons: in spring it sprouts flowers, in the summer it moves in the breeze, in autumn it loses its leaves, and in winter it freezes! Now, a game: without words, the “leader tree” acts out a season, and the other players have to be trees during different seasons - no one can be the same season! Now we’re showing trees at any one time around the globe. (Level up: how would a coniferous tree change?)

Inspired by…Poppy!

Pick something you see outside around where you live. It may be biotic (something alive like a plant or a worm) or abiotic (something that isn’t alive like a rock or a car). First, act it out! Can you become that thing with your full body? Then, connect it to other things around it, and act those out, too! A squirrel lives in a tree, which is covered by moss, which gets wet in the rain. Now you’re miming an entire habitat! How many things in your habitat can you mime? (Level up: can you mime a smell, sound, or feeling you sense outside? Explore through movement!)

Inspired by...A Snail and a Galaxy!

Play a matching game, like Poppy showed us! First, act out something from nature. Then, your partner has to match it! Do they match in shape, like a stone and a mountain? Or, do they match in function, like a crab shell and the husk of a seed? See if you can stump each other, and get creative! (Level up: Once you’ve made a match, you can invent a third match from your imagination!)

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

BKBX acknowledges that we gather today on the ancestral lands traditional land of the Lenape (Lenapehoking) people. We pay respect to those who were violently displaced as a result of European settler colonialism over the course of 400 years. We honor the 181,000 Indigenous people who live in New York City today. We invite you to join us in making a donation to The Lenape Center, which you can visit at www.lenape.center. Where do you live, play, and work? Visit native-land.ca and find out.

Our BKBX family sends our best to those who have been most impacted by the COVID19 pandemic. We thank our beloved community for their ongoing support, and join our theater colleagues in celebrating the value of the arts as a healing and transformative change-maker.
