David Jenkins

David Jenkins is an actor, director, writer, and mime based in Brooklyn. He is a proud founding member of Broken Box Mime Theater, and has been continuously active with the company since 2011. Also a founding member of Rag and Bone Theater Co., and a regular collaborator on Amios Theater's monthly Shotz series, David has been highly active in the indie theater community since 2007. Why Mime?

The imaginative experience achieved through mime is profound. The joy of creation is shared individually with each audience member in a unique and special way, as each person completes the story with his or her imagination.

When did you first encounter/learn about mime?

I saw a Hype! show at Tufts University my freshman year.

How did you find Broken Box Mime Theater?

I helped! In the first round of auditions, pre-establishment, Becky and the Tufts crew invited me to join.

If you had a solo mime piece about your life, what would it be called and why?

It exists! ‘Make Believe’, from our 2012 show ‘It’s All In Your Head’. It’s never enough to believe it. Ya gotta help make it.

What is your favorite thing about mime?

When body movements are super clean / clear / precise, but just dance along in unpredictable, narratively interesting ways.

What is your favorite food?

Honestly probably sushi.

What’s your most played song?

‘All My Heroes Are Weirdos’ by !!!

What's your favorite quote?

Too hard. But from the above song: “I don’t want to talk about what was. Can we not talk about what is? Why should we talk about what should be, when we could talk about what could be?”

What’s your favorite mode of transportation?

Subway! Nearly ubiquitous, and always the most interesting people-watching.

What sound do you love?

The Windows 95 startup sound. Among others.

If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?

My ancestor Michael Drayton, a poet and playwright.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you choose?

Valentine Michael Smith from Stranger in a Strange Land.

If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

Discovery of extraterrestrial intelligence.

Writing the space opera nonology I have cooking in the back of my head.

When you have 30 minutes of free-time, how do you pass the time?

Writing, reading, or video games.

What celebrity do you get mistaken for?

James Spader from ‘Stargate’.

What story does your family always tell about you?

For some reason that time I went the wrong way on the Hutch and ended up at the Tappan Zee.
